After hours / between shifts

When the shift ends, what stays exposed?

A quieter site still has assets, access points and responsibilities. Start with what remains on site and where an issue could disrupt work.

Fuel & stored materials

Fuel and materials can remain on site long after staff leave. A loss can delay deliveries, idle vehicles or hold up the next shift.

Cable & metal stock

Missing cable and metal stock can interrupt installation and repair work. Exposed routes, storage areas and delivery points deserve attention in the security brief.

Plant & equipment

A missing or damaged machine can affect more than its replacement cost. Consider the work it supports, the compound it occupies and access to keys.

Tools & working areas

Tools, containers and stocked cabins may sit unattended between shifts. Forced entry or damage can leave teams without what they need to start work.

Boundaries & unwanted access

Damaged fencing, shared entrances and gates left open can create unintended access routes. The patrol brief should reflect the boundaries that exist on the ground.

Damage & fire concerns

Broken glazing, damaged equipment or a suspected fire can leave a site unsafe to use. Clear reporting contacts help direct concerns to the right people.

The people behind the service

Two specialist roles. Different assignments.

Understand the work you are booking, from a security patrol to a planned drug detection search.

01

K9 patrols

A handler adds judgement to a visible presence.

A security dog works as part of a handler-and-dog team. The assignment gives that team a purpose: where to patrol, what to check and who to contact when something needs attention.

  1. Patrol with a purpose

Agree the routes, boundaries, vulnerable areas and hours that matter for the site.

  2. Work around people

Plan the dog's position and movements around staff, visitors, deliveries and public access.

  3. Observe, report, escalate

Record concerns and follow the agreed communication procedure, including contacting emergency services when needed.

02

Drug detection

A focused search, with a clear next step.

Drug detection is a specialist scent-search task. A detection handler directs the search, observes the dog's behaviour and communicates indications through the agreed site procedure.

  1. Agree the search brief

Set the search areas, timings, access arrangements and reporting contacts. Identify hazards and agree what happens if the dog indicates.

  2. Manage the search and welfare

Guide the dog through the agreed area, watch its behaviour and reassess hazards as conditions change. Allow suitable rest and water breaks.

  3. Record and explain the outcome

Record the areas searched, any indications and the action taken. A search with no indication is not a guarantee that an area is drug-free.

Area and item searches are commonly described as proactive searching; screening people is a different, passive-search assignment. The search type and suitability of the team must be confirmed before booking.

On-site security

Detection. Deterrence. A considered response.

Three connected purposes for a security assignment. The duties and response procedure must be defined for your site.

  1. 01

    Detection

Notice changes, access concerns or suspicious activity through the checks agreed for the assignment. Specialist drug searches require a detection team.

  2. 02

    Deterrence

Provide a visible security presence where it is appropriate. Plan its position around the site's layout and the people using it.

  3. 03

    Response

Report what is observed and follow the escalation plan. The right next step depends on the incident, safety and the agreed responsibilities.
